What Kind of Fish Lived in the Jurassic Era?

Have you ever wondered what it would be like for Flannel Fishermen to fish during the Jurassic Period? What kind of fish do you thing would you pull with your best ice fishing rod? The Jurassic period was a unique era in history in that it was during this time that dinosaur reign as ruler of the world. Their will was unquestioned and they eat all kinds of prey without being stopped. But while dinosaur roamed the dry land, there are pre-historic fishes that rule the water as well. This is the subject of out interest.

Some Pre-Historic Fishes of the Jurassic Era

Below is a sampling of some of the fishes that roam the world during the Jurassic period. Amazingly, these fishes are still alive today. Although they are relegated to the curiosity of fish and aquarium enthusiast, they swam with the greatest back in the days.

  1. Hagfish—It roamed the world around 300 million years ago, this fish was already old when the dinosaur saw the light of day. Found only in really deep waters, we call this fish today as slime eel.

  2. Lancetfish—The teeth and the over all appearance of the Lancetfish will tell you right off the bat that this is indeed a pre-historic animal. It can grow up to 6 feet and 6 inches in length, even its scientific name (Alepisaurus ferox) would already suggest an affinity with the dinosaur.

  3. Arowana—A very familiar fish among aquarium enthusiasts, who would think that this fish swam with the might dinosaur? Today, the arowana can be found in the Amazon, Asia, Australia and parts of Africa. If you have tried raising this fish in an aquarium you will not question its Jurassic origin because this fish can grow up really big and is capable of jumping really high into the air.

  4. Frilled Shark—If you’re looking for the ancient of ancients, the Frilled shark is a likely candidate. One of the most primitive of sharks, this deep sea predator hailed from the Cretaceous period. This fish hardly posts any danger to human beings since it spends most of its time in really deep waters and it feeds mostly on squid.

  5. Sturgeon—Favorite for grilling, but are you aware that you’re eating a relic when you eat sturgeon? Also the favorite source of caviar, this fish is in great danger of getting extinct due to over fishing. This fish can grow up to six meters long and comparable in size to the great white shark.

  6. Arapaima—A close relative of the arowana, this Amazonian relic is considered to be the biggest fresh water fish in the world. Although seldom found to grow this as big nowadays, an Araipana can grow to as large as 2 meters in the wild.

Sometimes called living fossils, these fishes gives us a glimpse of what life was like during the Jurassic Period. It was far from tame, as what the beauty of these fishes would suggest. It was a time where only the fittest would survive while the rest are just their preys.

Few stories have captured the imagination of readers and movie audiences alike than that of Jurassic Park. This classic tale originally sprung forth as a novel by Michael Crichton in 1990 and was adapted three years later in to an acclaimed movie directed by Steven Spielberg. In both the book and movie we follow paleontologist Alan Grant as he is given a private tour of billionaire John Hammond’s amazing new theme park – a theme park in which breakthroughs in genetic technology have allowed Hammond’s team to clone long-dead dinosaurs and other prehistoric life from recovered DNA. You may be tempted to ask is a real Jurassic Park possible? Unfortunately, there’s a few problems that leave Jurassic Park firmly in the world of science fiction…

DNA Degrades

We’ll start with the basics – can you even recover a dinosaur’s preserved DNA? Sadly, no. Genetic material only has a half life of about 500 years or so, far short of the millions of years needed to get to the age of the dinosaurs. In the story’s defense, they do address this somewhat: in both the movie and the original novel the characters mention that gaps in the recovered genetic material were filled in using the DNA of related species, such as frogs. However, in the real world that wouldn’t be enough – after 65 million years there simply isn’t any DNA left to work with, no matter how well preserved they are.  Here’s a video going into much greater detail.

There’s Nothing to Clone With

In the real world, cloning still relies on fairly traditional biological processes: your copied DNA needs to be in a fertilized egg from the same species (or at least, an EXTREMELY similar one) and that egg needs to be incubated properly. Jurassic Park managed to tackle the last part – in the movie/book elaborate nursery facilities are shown, and it’s believable that those facilities might be able to properly care for an incubating dinosaur egg. Where are those eggs coming from, though? Fossilized eggs aren’t viable, and a dinosaur’s closest living relatives are birds (more on that in a moment). In short, even if we could manufacture a working copy of dinosaur DNA we have no mechanism in place for actually growing it in to a living creature.

Dinosaurs Aren’t Giant Lizards in the First Place

Recent advances in paleontology have concluded that dinosaurs were much more closely related to birds than they were to lizards. In fact, scientists agree that most dinosaurs had feathers, and a feathered dinosaur tail was even recently found preserved in amber! What this means is that even if you did miraculously find a non-decayed sample of dinosaur DNA, and somehow found a viable egg in which to place it, what would come out is a goofy feathered creature more akin to a chicken than it is to the terrifying lizard-like monsters we see in the movie.

Fortunately for our safety, Jurassic Park is safely contained in the world of sci-fi. But prehistory lovers don’t need to despair – the commercial success of the films all but gauruntees that we’ll get to see our dinosaur friends wreak havoc for years to come.

There’s no doubts about it that the movie Jurassic Park was an excellent film and a huge success along with all of the sequels, but what are the differences between jurassic park the book and jurassic park the movie? Most readers know that when Hollywood takes a book over to make into a movie that some of the most important things get kept out or changed which can turn the movie into something completely different.

Jurassic Park the Book

Famous author and writer, Michael Crichton, wrote one of his most famous pieces of work, Jurassic Park. It is a sci-fi novel that is based on genetic engineering. He had written other sequels to the book as well. Steven Spielberg took the book and made it into a movie in 1993.

Differences Between the Book and the Movie

One of the biggest differences between the book and the movie was the book incorporated the Procompsognathus dinosaur. In the movie, the use of this type of dinosaur were dropped as many claim affected the plot.

The novel depicts Dr. Grant as being a lover of children where in the movie he does not like them. This is something that’s very subtle, but when readers of the book saw the movie, they noticed the difference immediately.

A Stegosaurus was used in the book when Dr. Ellie left the tour to attend to it. In the movie a different type of dinosaur was used. Again, this is something very subtle that one the reader would know but important to them and the plot of the film as different dinosaurs had certain traits.

Muldoon blows up one of the dinosaurs with a bazooka in the book. In the movie, this did not happen. It would not make sense to use a mass weapon of destruction like so. Besides, who has one of these handy to take on dinosaurs? A bazooka is not as accessible as a gun or other type of weapon.

There were moments in the book and movie that stayed the same such as Nerdy’s death. There was a slight difference but not enough to ruin the parallel. If you’ve read the book, then you might want to go back and rewatch the movie again.

If you’ve got the time or your professor is begging you to read the novel, Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, you should do so then watch the movie so you can spot the differences. You’ll be able to spot them instantly whether they are subtleties or not.
